Janice Tucker Rhoda '89
"NEC helped shape my positive attitude about teaching and the lasting impact teachers have throughout our lives."
Janice Tucker Rhoda '89 began her NEC journey as a teenager in the early 1970s when she enrolled in the Preparatory School program with private lessons, chamber music and orchestra. Tuition wasn't easy for her parents with five children but they made financial sacrifices so she could participate. That experience, plus her years of teaching students, inspired Janice to support music education for families with financial need.
Janice included a gift in her will that establishes a scholarship for NEC Prep students who wish to study stringed instruments. "My time at NEC shaped me as an artist, creator and educator. This gift will help future generations of musicians attain their specific goals. It's wonderful to know I will be impacting students' lives for many, many years to come."
"While attending NEC's Preparatory School, Professor Eric Rosenblith escalated my love for playing the violin. He was Chair of NEC's Strings Department at the time and he encouraged me to audition for the college. I was thrilled to be accepted and was honored to be asked to join the Mu Phi Epsilon National Music Sorority."
In the years since graduating from NEC, Janice has dedicated her career to music education in the United States and abroad. Additionally, she is the author of the critically acclaimed ABCs of Strings and Complete Technique instruction series for violin, viola, cello, and double bass, published by Carl Fischer Music. Additional Giving Options
By making a planned gift, you can strengthen NEC and gain financial and tax benefits for you and your family. For more information, please contact Aaron McGarry, Planned Giving Officer, by email or by phone at 617-585-1356.
Real estate can be contributed as an outright gift or to finance a planned gift. Available options include a retained life estate, which allows the donor to continue to use the property for a certain number of years, or for the donor’s lifetime. Other arrangements offer special tax advantages and lifetime income.
Gifts of real estate include undeveloped land, a residence, a vacation home, a farm, or commercial property. NEC requires the donor to bear certain costs when making a real estate gift, such as an appraisal to determine the fair market value. Also, NEC deducts transaction costs from the proceeds of the sale of the property, including the closing costs, title insurance, a survey (if needed), and any taxes due before the gift is completed.
For any questions about gifts of real estate, please contact Abigail Smitka, Assistant Vice President of Major Gifts and Campaigns, at as3628@necmusic.edu or (617) 585-1719.
