“My experience in the classrooms of New England Conservatory was transformative.”

Joy McIntyre’s extraordinary journey in music was shaped significantly by her time at New England Conservatory and the pivotal support she received through the Emma Eames Scholarship. As a recipient of this prestigious award, Joy pursued her Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance, an experience that laid the foundation for her distinguished career as a leading soprano on the world’s grandest stages.

"The Emma Eames Scholarship enabled me to audition and study German in Munich, a city rich in musical heritage, where I expanded my artistic horizons. Every day was a beautiful adventure,” says Joy. Reflecting on this period, she often credits her overseas experience with defining and broadening her education, offering invaluable insights that she carried throughout her professional life.

Graduating from NEC in 1963, Joy embarked on a career as an opera singer, performing with renowned opera houses across Europe. Her voice resonated in the most prestigious venues, earning her acclaim as a leading soprano over her nineteen-year tenure in Germany and beyond. Later in her career, Joy became a professor at Boston University (now emeritus) and Chair of the Voice Department.

Joy has included a gift for NEC in her will to establish a travel fund for future generations of students. “My experience in the classrooms of New England Conservatory was transformative. So was my time in Munich. My gift will enable the creators and performers of tomorrow to have the same opportunities,” she explains. Joy’s fund will support students who want to travel in order to study, perform research, and audition for musical performances.
